Functions and Mode of Operation
The gimbal can be used either with an action camera only or with an action camera and an additional smartphone that serves as a remote control. The most important functions can be used directly via the buttons and setting wheels on the gimbal, and an OLED display is also integrated, which shows all relevant information at a glance. An additional smartphone is therefore not necessary for most applications. However, some functions, such as time-lapse recording, require a smartphone.
The Gimbal is connected to the Action-Cam via WLAN, an additional smartphone is connected with Bluetooth. The gimbal has additional threads that allow accessories to be connected. Users who regularly want to use a smartphone for control purposes can screw on a separate holder to keep their hands free when filming.
The Feiyu ON App is available free of charge for Android– and iOS-Smartphones. Unfortunately, as in our previous test, there are still regular Bluetooth disconnections with both an iPhone Xs and a Samsung Galaxy S8. The rating of 1.6 of a maximum of 5.0 stars in the Apple Store and 2.2 of a maximum of 5.0 stars in the Google Play Store shows that these are not individual cases. Another criticism is that the apps require extensive access rights, for example to the phone book and the location, which are not actually required for the operation of the camera. On a positive note, the firmware of the gimbal can be updated via the smartphone app without an additional computer.
The replaceable battery provides power for about twelve hours. It can also be used to supply the Action-Cam with power during operation and thus extend the operating time. The 5,000 mAh battery is recharged via USB connection in about two hours.
The test image was taken while running with a GoPro Hero 7 Black. The gimbal was not connected to a smartphone during this time. The stabilization is convincing, even with fast movements there are almost no jerkers noticeable and the movements appear calm.
