After SD Express, the SD Association has now introduced microSD Express at MWC 2019. With PCIe 3.1 and NVMe 1.3, the new memory cards reach speeds of up to 985 MB/s, but are still downward compatible with the previous microSD interface. Then of course such high speeds are not achieved.
The SD 7.1 specifications include several variants, including microSDHC Express, microSDXC Express and microSDUC Express. Accordingly, the mini memory cards will also appear with different memory capacities, as we already know it from “normal” mSD cards.
The microSD Express memory cards are particularly suitable for high-resolution videos in 8K, VR or 360 degrees as well as RAW photos. But microSD Express is also interesting for other applications, such as games.
It will certainly be some time before we see the first microSD Express memory cards on the market, but we can already look forward to small, fast and energy-saving memory for our mobile devices.
