At the IFA in Berlin, Toshiba presented new hard drives that offer up to 16 TB storage capacity.
Both the N300-NAS- and the X300-Performance-HDDs are now available with 16 TB. This is 14 percent more storage capacity than previous models, which offered up to 14 TB. In addition, the buffer memory has been doubled from 256 to 512 MB.
The new 16-TB HDDs are helium-sealed and contain 9 disks. This technology allows Toshiba to offer higher storage density at lower power consumption. The helium is safely enclosed in the drive by laser welding, so the user does not have to worry.
Both series offer a rotational speed of 7,200 rpm. While the N300 NAS hard drives are designed for 24/7 continuous operation and a workload of up to 180 TB per year, making them perfect for NAS storage, the X300 series takes a different approach. It is designed for use in normal PCs and workstations.
