Cloud boom boosts Microsoft’s profits

In the third quarter of 2020, Microsoft was able to increase its profits by 30 percent to 13.9 billion dollars compared to the same period last year. Revenue grew by 12 percent to 37.2 billion dollars in the same period. The main driver of the high revenue and profit growth is the booming cloud business, which has grown more strongly than expected thanks to Covid-19 and increased work in the home office. The Azure platform was therefore able to increase its revenue by 48 percent. The Group’s office programs from Redmond also benefited.
Other sales drivers were the gaming business around the Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Surface Tablets, which increased its sales by 30 and 37 percent respectively. The Group’s PC division, which also includes the Windows desktop and server operating systems, increased its sales by six percent, bringing in USD 11.8 billion.
