Tesoro Olivant Pro Review: 7.1 Surround Headset for Only 50 Euro

The Tesoro Olivant Pro is a high quality headset from a Taiwanese company. In this country this company is still relatively unknown. Even though I have already tested some of Tesoro’s convincing products, the Tesoro Olivant Pro is unfortunately less a part of it. The metal headband with self-adjusting ergonomic headband gives the headset a very good, comfortable fit, but the ear cups are not flexible and on other head shapes it can look quite different.

In addition to the headset, a USB sound card with inline remote control is also included. This provides virtual 7.1 sound. However, the headset can also be connected directly using the 1.4 metre long braided jack cable. A splitter cable is also included to separate the audio in and out.

Workmanship and Appearance

The ear cushions of the Tesoro Olivant Pro Headset are very generously manufactured. They offer an excellent hold and sufficient sound insulation to the outside. The ear cushions can be replaced by removing them if necessary. The microphone can be plugged into the left auricle using a jack plug. The connecting element can be moved to any position.

The Tesoro Olivant Pro Headset can be connected directly via a fixed audio cable. You can also connect this headset to the USB sound card with cable remote control. The cable remote can be used to mute the microphone. In addition, the cable remote control serves as volume control.

I think the headset’s workmanship is good, even though it’s mostly made of plastic. The components are precisely assembled and all cleanly processed. But there are problems with the construction, as you will read in the sound part.

Commissioning of the Tesoro Olivant Pro

The headset can be used directly on your PC, tablet, console, or smartphone. No additional driver needs to be installed. The headset is immediately recognized as a conventional loudspeaker under Windows.

In order to use the integrated C-Media sound card, an additional driver must be installed. Any Tesoro Olivant Pro user can download this driver from the manufacturer’s product page.

The C-Media driver offers a clearly structured configuration interface. This allows many settings to be made directly, for example:

  • Setting the virtual 7.1 sound
  • Activate the “Xear” surround sound
  • Adjusting different sound effects
  • Activation of the equalizer
  • Microphone setting options.

The headphones use a 50 mm driver for each ear cup. These cover a frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The integrated C-Media sound card allows the headset to simulate a virtual 7.1 sound. The user does not have to resort to other sound cards for this.

In games the 7.1 sound makes the direction of the noises easy to detect, but unfortunately there is no feeling in the middle. The sound details are unfortunately not completely clean, the sound is not very dynamic and there is a lack of everything to get the perfect sound. It’s enough for gaming, but less for listening to music.

The Sound Quality of the Tesoro Olivant Pro

The sound quality of this headset has both advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include:

  • powerful 50 mm driver
  • even at high volume, the headset delivers an undistorted and clean sound
  • Spacial emulation works well despite analog wiring
  • excellent insulation against external noise due to high-quality workmanship.

However, there are also some disadvantages of the Tesoro Olivant Pro when it comes to sound quality. These include, among other things:

  • sound tuning is center-emphasized – dynamics get lost thereby
  • Cable construction and metal bracket of the auto-adjustment are sound bridges
  • Sound is transmitted unfiltered into the ear when knocking against the metal frame and scratching the braided audio cable
  • Resonance of the interior furnishing of the home is transmitted to the listeners.

Also with the recording quality of the microphone we noticed advantages as well as disadvantages. The recording succeeds only from one direction, so that disturbing noises are excluded for the most part. The microphone has a gooseneck. This makes it easy for any user to adjust the microphone at mouth level. The recording quality is not perfect, the spoken word is noiseless and understandable, but it sounds very dull.

Conclusion on the Tesoro Olivant Pro

Anyone who picks up the Tesoro Olivant Pro is one of the price-conscious buyers. And that’s what you get. The headset is well crafted, a USB sound card with 7.1 surround sound is integrated and the microphone’s recordings are clearly intelligible. However, the sound lacks dynamics and the microphone sounds very dull. This means that a lot of quality is lost.

The wearing comfort as well as the extensive scope of delivery are positively striking. However, the insulation can still be improved. That’s how you hear the cable as soon as it moves. The flexible headband may also make some noise if the headset moves too much.

All in all, I can only give a limited recommendation and would personally rather take a few euros more in my hand. I am used to a better quality from Tesoro.

The Tesoro Olivant Pro Gaming Headset scores with excellent features and good workmanship. However, the sound and recording quality can still be improved.
