Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 get camouflage feature of Pixel 6a

The mid-range smartphone Google Pixel 6a has just recently been launched and, among other things, brought a new magic eraser feature with it. As Google has now announced, the camouflage feature is now coming to the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6.

Although the Google Pixel 6a positions itself well below its larger sibling models in the mid-range, it has a technical trick or two in tow. This includes, for example, the so-called camouflage feature of the Magic Eraser.

We remember: The Google Pixel 6 Pro (our review) and Pixel 6 introduced a feature at release that simply cut unwanted people or objects out of the background. This sometimes worked more and sometimes less well in practice.

The camouflage feature of the Pixel 6a, on the other hand, allows recomposing the image. Objects in photos can be easily marked and changed in terms of color and brightness. This feature is now making its way into the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6, as the company revealed via Twitter.

Use camouflage feature: Here’s how

Using the Google Photos app, simply select one of your images to use the magic eraser along with the new Camouflage feature:

  1. Open the Google Photos app
  2. Select the image you want to adjust
  3. Click “Edit”
  4. Navigate to “Tools”
  5. Click on “Magic Eraser”
  6. Now select “Hide” there
  7. Circle or highlight with your finger the object you want to adjust or change

In this case, the AI features of the Google smartphones independently determine the new color for the corresponding object with the aim of inserting it into the overall composition of the photo as little as possible.

The whole thing works, like the Magic Eraser, sometimes more and sometimes less well, but in some cases it can also make for an interesting new image and should ideally help you to bring the important objects or people into better focus.

It is also likely that the Camouflage feature will be included in the upcoming Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7. The Google smartphones will rely on a new design and could be unveiled as early as September 2022.
