Google Nest WiFi Pro: Chic router with Wi-Fi 6E and Matter Hub

With the Google Nest WiFi Pro, the tech giant introduced a new router shortly before the presentation of the Pixel 7 smartphones. The new model in the chic Orb design relies on fast Wi-Fi 6E and also serves as a hub for the new Matter smart home standard.

The Google Nest WiFi Pro in detail

The new Google Nest WiFi Pro marks the company’s most advanced and fastest Wi-Fi router to date. The advanced mesh Wi-Fi system relies on fast Wi-Fi 6E, which should enable even higher data rates thanks to the new 6 GHz band.

Google talks about up to twice the speed than in the case of Wi-Fi 6 in the announcement, which means that the compact and sleek router is already ready for the latest smartphones, notebooks and many other devices.

In addition, the router is supposed to be able to continuously analyze and optimize your network to always provide the best possible connection. Activities that require a particularly high bandwidth – such as video calls, streaming or online games – are automatically prioritized by the WLAN router.

The tri-band router can transmit simultaneously in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands and is said to be capable of speeds of up to 4.2 Gbit/s at peak. A single router should be able to cover an area of up to 120 m², but up to three devices can also be combined in a mesh, which means that up to 300 devices can then communicate in the network.

Easy setup and Matter support

The Google Nest WiFi Pro relies on a simple Orb design and thus gives in the home visually a better figure than most routers. With the help of the Google Home app, the setup is supposed to be particularly easy and can be completed within a few minutes even by laymen thanks to step-by-step instructions.

Speed tests can also be performed within the app. You can also conveniently share your Wi-Fi password or create guest networks. The app also offers family functions for your own Wi-Fi network, which parents can use to adjust and restrict access for children, for example.

However, the Google Nest WiFi Pro also functions as a hub for the new smart home standard Matter. This is made possible by a built-in Thread Border router that uses the corresponding wireless protocol.

This means that Thread-enabled smart home devices can be easily integrated into the home network via the router and managed directly via the Google app.

By the way, the Google Nest WiFi Pro is offered in four colors (Snow, Fog, Linen and Lemongrass). It measures 130 mm x 117 mm 85 mm (height x width x depth) and is therefore quite compact. The weight is 450 grams. There are two Gigabit LAN ports on the back, which allow wired Internet connection of devices.

Price and Availability

The Google Nest WiFi Pro Wi-Fi 6E router is available for pre-order now directly from the Google Online Store. A single router is priced at a recommended retail price of 219.99 euros, while a bundle of two routers is offered for 329.99 euros. Delivery is scheduled for October 27, 2022.
