Lenovo and Motorola show rollable concept for smartphones and notebooks

Lenovo and Motorola presented the concept of a Rollabale at Lenovo Tech World 2022. Smartphone and notebook wait with a rollable display that can be rolled out in height to display more of the image.

For Lenovo’s in-house Tech World 2022, Lenovo and Motorola had a true innovation in tow. The companies’ Rollable concept stands out from previous similar rollable displays. This is because the Lenovo/Motorola model does not expand in width, but vertically.

That is of course practical for displaying particularly long content like websites. However, it also ensures that videos can be displayed in a 21:9 aspect ratio in landscape mode. In the case of the smartphone concept, the manufacturers are talking about a flexible OLED panel with a screen diagonal of just 4 inches. However, the size can still be expanded to a respectable 6.5 inches by rolling it out.

“At Motorola, we see the smartphone as an extension of ourselves – a tool that allows us to adapt to our surroundings and complete tasks with ease,” says the manufacturer.

The Rollable unfolds with just the touch of a button, and elements within the Android operating system are automatically adjusted and moved according to the growing display size as it rolls out.

With this innovative concept, Motorola continues to go full throttle in the smartphone market. After having introduced so many models this year that no one can actually remember them.

From the Edge 30 Pro at the beginning of the year to the flagship Edge 30 Ultra to the models G72, e22i, Edge 2022, G32 and how they are not all called. With the Razr 2022, they also have an exciting foldable smartphone up their sleeve.

Also laptop with rollable display

In addition to the rollable smartphone, however, Lenovo is also demonstrating the concept using a laptop with a rollable display. In its normal state, the form factor resembles that of a classic notebook. However, thanks to the display that expands in height, the screen area expands from around 13 inches to almost 17 inches.

However, the manufacturer does not reveal many details about the concept. In terms of design, the rollable notebook is reminiscent of the manufacturer’s IdeaPad series. As exciting as the two Rollabale studies are: They are merely concepts that are supposed to sound out the technology.

Whether, when and in what form the flexible, height-expanding OLED display will come onto the market is still completely open.
